Lavanasura Vadham Kathakali by Kalanilayam Gopi Ashaan - an evening of delightful performance on the occasion of Keraleeyam 2010 by KALA Abu Dhabi.

KALA ABU DHABI organized “KERALEEYAM-2010” - as part of the inaugural function of newly elected Managing Committee for the year 2010-11 on 24th of June Thursday evening at India Social & Cultural Center, Abu Dhabi.

A delightful Kathakali performance by renowned Kathakali artist and guru Sree Kalanilayam Gopi Asan and his team was the attraction of the evening for the packed auditorium of ISCC main hall. A thayambaka, Keli and Mohiniyattam dance performances added to the list of memorable performances of that evening.

The Kathakali was based on the story “Lavanasura Vadham” , a section from Ramayana where where Rama is ruling after duly completing his 14 years in exile. A casual conversation of his two sub-ordinates, a washerman and his washerwoman, where it appeared as if there is a black mark on the purity of Sita who had spent a few months alone in Lanka under the custody of Ravana. The washerman tells the washerwoman that I will not take you back in my house if you spend a single night outside even though our King Rama took back his wife Sita. The word spread around of this conversation and although, this comparison is quite unjust, Rama, respecting popular opinion decided to send Sita into the forest. Sita was pregnant and also contemplating to visit some sages in the forest and take their blessings. Sri Rama requested Lakshmana to leave Sita in the forest and come back. The unsuspecting Sita was left in the forest but fortunately near the ashram of Valmiki. Valmiki took Sita into the ashram and consoled her. Soon Sita delivered twins. Sage Valmiki named them Kusha and Lava. He taught them all the sciences and arts of the time. And they grew up with the sage. At that time, in the nearby forest lived a demon called Lavanasura. He was terrorising the sages who lived there. They complained to Rama who sent his brother Shatrughna to deal with the demon. Shatrughna kills the demon. Then starts an Aswamedha yaga in which a decorated horse was sent out followed by a mighty army led by Shatrughna. The horse came near to Valmiki's ashram. Lava and Kusha tied up the horse, and fought with Shatrughna and defeated him. Rama also came for battle but went back without fighting.

Rama then asked Hanuman to bring the Horse. However Lava and Kusha tied up Hanuman (rather Hanuman allows himself to be tied up) and brought him to Sita. Sita was astonished and immensely happy to see Hanuman. She ordered him to be released from the knots. Hanuman enquired about the well being of Sita and also told her that Rama had made a statue of Sita for completing the yaga rites. This made Sita happy. Hanuman went back happily with the Horse.

It is the fourth time that KALA Abu Dhabi is bringing Kathakali performance to the art lovers of UAE. The enthusiasm and interest by organizers convey a message that this traditional art form of Kerala will have many more stages in future. Utilising this opportunity a demonstration and Kathakali Pada Kacheri was held by Thiranottam in Dubai on Friday and a similar programme was held at Abu Dhabi Malayali Samajam. Both programmes were attended by large number of Kathakli enthusiasts and the narration by Kalanilayam Dr. Rajeev, an oncology specialist working with Regional Cancer Centre Trivandrum was a boon to many to understand the art form and create added interest to the novice.

The action photos of this post were captured by Potent Shinz and Saleem Abu Alyazia admins of Abu Dhabi Photographers Club group on Face Book.

Looking forward to many more performances by Guru Kalanilayam Gopi Ashan and troup in the region.

Dear Talent Share Participating members and Fans,

1. I sincerely thank each and every participating member of Talent Share Fan page and blog. May be due to school holidays in India and school ending season and exams before summer holidays, the responses received to the May 2010 themes have been limited.

With the importance of the themes mentioned for May and it’s relevance to children, I am continuing them for June 2010 with additions.

Flowers and vegetables

You may draw different types of flowers and vegetables you get to see in your day to day life. If possible, try to add their botanical name to add interest and knowledge to the viewers.

Life in a Zoo

You can draw and present animals, birds and other activities you watch in a zoo. This is also an opportunity to visit a zoon nearby your home and present what you see there either as a drawing, coloring, cartoon etc.

Traffic Awareness

This is an important theme presented for the month of May and I am continuing for June as well. As many of you may be aware by now, the directorate of traffic and patrol (general command of Abu Dhabi police -UAE) and SAAED company is conducting one of the largest international ART competition. The competition is for traffic regulation under the banner of (traffic safety). The rules and regulations are detailed in the following link.

Master - Joshua Godfrey
Winner of Reflections painting competition held at ISCC Abu Dhabi on 14.05.2010
Group 3 - Age 7 - 10 yrs.

Please join me in congratulating our participating member Master Joshua Godfrey for his recent achievement.

Talking about Joshua, I remember the first time he participated in Talent Share initiatives in November 2008. It was for the first online competition conducted by Talent Share he submitted one of his drawings. When I met him after, with his father, to present a small gift, which was given that time to all the participating children, he was hiding behind him. Introducing him to me, his father Godfrey told me, he is the only one at their home with a different talent as he, his wife Jasmine and Joshua’s elder brother Jaison are all musically oriented and regularly present programmes and get gifts and certificates. Joshua was that time the one who was left alone without any representation to his credit at their medal collections.

I periodically talked to him, his arts teacher and his parents and encouraged him to participate and present often. His regular participation, his parents effort to put him on drawing classes even while on holidays at Kerala, and the encouragement of his own arts and crafts teacher Mr. Rajkumar at Our Own English High School Abu Dhabi changed the situation at the display at his home.

He is now a regular winner wherever and whenever he participates. I am very happy for you Joshua, God bless you and your talent to grow to greater heights.

To see some of his creative presentations at Talent Share, please visit the following link.

Team 1 Talent Share Message to Members : Theme for May 2010

Team 1 Talent Share Message to Members : Theme for May 2010

Dear Talent Share Participating members and Fans,

1. I sincerely thank each and every participating member of Talent Share Fan page and blog. The responses received to the April 2010 themes have been remarkable. It became an open example of bringing out hidden and innate talents of our members as we watched with interest the beautiful jewellery collections presented.

I am presenting to you the themes for May 2010:

• Life in a Zoo

You can draw and present animals, birds and other activities you watch in a zoo. This is also an opportunity to visit a zoon nearby your home and present what you see there either as a drawing, coloring, cartoon etc.

• Traffic Awareness

This is an important theme presented for the month of May. Some of you may be aware, the directorate of traffic and patrol (general command of Abu Dhabi police -UAE) and SAAED company is conducting one of the largest international ART competition. The competition is for traffic regulation under the banner of (traffic safety). The rules and regulations are detailed in the following link.

http://www.saaed.ae/Section.aspx?name=cmp_165

* I hope, Talent Share participating members from worldwide are inspired by this theme to submit their creative contribution directly at the link and address mentioned in the above link. At the same time, I am requesting you to present a copy of it so that, it inspires more members to participate. I am encouraging a multiple presentation policy because; I believe that a healthy competition always brings out the best.

2. I would like to also inform you that the recent newspaper coverage with the support of Malayala Manorama has brought in many entries and visitors to the Fan page and blog. The effort is a continuous process and thus repeats my request to all the participating members to present neat and complete work. More such presentation opportunities are looked upon and very soon you will see the result of it.

3. I am happy to inform you that, our dedicated style of presentation and participation is getting recognised and appreciated by organisations and associations. One such example is the important announcement by Christ College Irinjalakuda Alumni association to showcase on Talent Share sites the entire presentations submitted by their member’s children for an ongoing art competition. Organisations and cultural associations and their active members are invited to present such activities on Talent Share.

4. Due to ongoing changes on Face Book, several new options and enhancements are coming out. It is causing sometimes huge inconvenience and loss of data. This was one of the reasons; I couldn’t implement the two new added features informed to you through the Message dated 31 March 2010. However, here too, we take the principle, a change is an opportunity and I am working on several added features during the split seconds of my available time devoted for Talent Share. Watch out for them, and promise you to make it interesting as usual. All these actions are done with sincere interest to prove the good aspects of utilising social network sites for the benefit of the society around.

As I rephrase and quote Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s words, do you need to be motivated to promote and participate Talent Share?

Wish you a great month day and great month ahead.
